NSW UNDER 20s WOMEN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Four members of this year’s Kittyhawks squad have helped the NSW Under 20 team take out the Silver medal at the recent Australian Junior Championships. Kate Hewett, Georgia Ohrdorf, Liisa and Katherine Ups travelled to Kalamunda in Perth to compete in the week long competition back in February.

The NSW girls convincingly defeated the more fancied Queensland as well as the ACT and Tasmanian teams in the early games to finish top of Pool B. The crossover game saw the girls comprehensively defeat the NZ team to book a spot in the semi final. This pitted the Blues against the home team. WA played strong however NSW had their measure and led at every turn running out winners by 20 points. In the other semi, Victoria took on Queensland with the Vics edging out the Queenslanders in a tight contest. This set up an enthralling grand final between the only two undefeated teams in the tournament.

Perth had put on hot weather all week and the grand final was no different with the temperature reaching the high 30s court side. The Victorians came out firing however the NSW girls managed to hang on, trailing by 8 going into the halftime break. The second half saw Victorian taking it up a notch and they went on to win the match by 23. The Illawarra girls had a great week with all making significant contributions to the scoreboard in every game. Hopefully they will continue their fine for the Kittyhawks season.
