Coaching courses

Accreditation is issued by Basketball Australia and delivered in NSW by Basketball NSW. Basketball Illawarra hosts courses at the Snakepit and tells coaches when the next one opens.

Community coaching — free, online

The starting point for anyone coaching a local junior team for the first time, including coaches under 16. Free online modules through Basketball Australia’s community coaching resources on etrainu. Complete them before your first game.

Competition Coach (formerly Club Coach / Level 1)

The standard accreditation for domestic and junior representative coaches, and mandatory for all Junior Hawks head and assistant coaches. Minimum age 16 (15 turning 16 in the year is fine). Pre-requisites: the etrainu online module and the Play by the Rules child safeguarding course. Existing Club Coaches have been recognised automatically at Competition Bronze.

Representative Coach (formerly Association Coach / Level 2)

For Division 1, state and high-performance coaches. A two-day course covering recovery and nutrition, strength and conditioning, advanced offensive and defensive concepts, scouting and game preparation. Pre-requisites: minimum age 21 and current Competition Coach accreditation. Existing Association Coaches start at Representative Bronze.

Progressing — Bronze, Silver, Gold

Within each stream you earn Coach Development Points from BNSW workshops, the Basketball Illawarra coach development series, online learning and seasons coached. Points are tracked in the Qualification Management System on etrainu.
