Just a quick update on what the Board has been up to since you heard from us last. But first we would like to thank you all on the positive response to Glory League, hopefully we will continue to use this to watch games, learn from what we see and enjoy building our community of basketballers.
What since then?
- Future Growth Building Committee
This committee was formed to explore the possibility of getting a new building constructed to house a minimum of 8 new basketball courts on top of what we are currently delivering. The committee is chaired by our Secretary Radmila Avramovic and supported Director Jay Hughes. This committee consists of other members from our community who do not wish to be named. The committee has located possible land site and has come up with an outline of what the future would include. Radmila Avramovic and Jay Hughes are now starting to work on a feasibility study with BNSW to put in for a grant to assist in the development of the site. The Site would be an excellence centre for Women, Indigenous people and people with Disabilities. Discussions and interest have been formed with other organisations in the Illawarra to support the proposed building and future for basketball and sport in the Illawarra region.
- Community Participation Committee
This Committee was formed to increase community participation with a focus on Indigenous participation. This committee is chaired by Jay Hughes and supported by Radmila Avramovic. Jay has initiated school holiday Indigenous basketball camps and looking to start weekly skills development programs. They have contacted a newly formed organisation “Indigenous Basketball Australia” that has led to Illawarra Basketball Association placed on the list for the roll out of Indigenous basketball events and programs into the future.
- Sponsorships and Grants
Currently the board is looking at defining sponsorship packages and this will be an ongoing activity as things change in our community. Heading this up is Glen Stutchbury and we will be coming up with new and unique ways in which we can raise revenue for the association. Even though Glen has resigned from the board he will continue to work on our sponsorship packages.
Several Grants have been applied for and we are waiting to hear from them. We are also looking at upgrades to some parts of the stadium and gaining grant funding for those.
By bringing Bec (Rebecca) Dudic onboard, our Basketball Development Manager, we have started to explore the possibility of a WNBL team, that combined with NBL1 coming will create clear pathways for participation. Don’t forget the state wide wheelchair basketball competition increasing opportunities for members of our community to participate and engage in our competitions.
Financially John Dunning is overseeing that we are in a healthy position, dealing with two pandemic lockdowns and the financial support needed to meet compliance and funding applications. Sadly John will be leaving the board in August due to his own personal business obligation. For that reason we have advertised for the position of Treasurer, for anyone who is interested can you please put in your application.
I have been supporting the staff, as the complaints handler I took on a different approach and thought I would ask you the members of what you thought about our staff. I have been collating the responses and thankfully most of you are very happy with the way we handle things here at the stadium. Our aim is to ensure you all feel like part of a community and once COVID is over we have been bouncing around many ideas that would see us getting together and enjoying each others company on and off the court.
I hope you have enjoyed my update and look forward to keeping you informed when the time comes.
